Synthesis and characterization of novel giomers for dental applications

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The aim of the present work was to prepare and characterize a series of dental giomers and their corresponding dental adhesive and to evaluate the adhesion of the new materials at the restoration/tooth interface. The experimental giomers were prepared as monopastes by blending the resin matrices, a new pre-reacted glass, a radiopaque glass and fluorhydroxyapatite. The novelty of the work is represented by the using of a polyalkenoic acid based on acrylic acid, itaconic acid and N-acryloyl -Lleucine a… Show more

“…The particle size distributions for the two glass powders were similar concerning d (0.1) (1.628 μm for PRG1 when compared to 1.584 μm for PRG2) and d (0.5) (10.760 μm in the case of PRG1 and 10.806 μm in the case of PRG2, respectively). PRG2 had a slightly higher d (0.9) than PRG1 (23.932 μm as compared to 21.992 μm) (Analysette 22 Nano Tec Laser-Particle-Sizer, FRITSCH, Idar-Oberstein, Germany) [29,33].…”

“…The positive 5-year clinical outcome for both giomer restorative materials may indicate beneficial effects from S-PRG fillers, which give giomers the added benefit of sustained fluoride release and rechargeability over a long period of time. 19 The authors assume that these additional benefits provided by S-PRG fillers likely contributed to the clinical success of the two giomers after 5 years. Therefore, giomers represent a new category of specialized restorative materials with promising clinical outcomes.…”

“…The S‐PRG fillers in giomer materials also allow for sustained fluoride release and rechargeability, giving the tooth continual protection against caries recurrence. Giomers present the benefits of both composite resin material and amalgam as they provide long‐term esthetics and durability, as well as ion release for maintenance of the tooth structure 19 …”

“…Hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate found in the hard tissues of the human body such as bones and teeth. In orthopedic and dental surgery is applied for bone grafts or as a covering material for medical implants [81][82][83][84], in remineralization of enamel [85,86] or to remove the heavy metals from wastewater [87]. In terms of implant coverage, it improves cell viability and adhesion, provides good rigidity and low elasticity.…”
