Synthesis and characterization of novel natural rubber based cationic waterborne polyurethane—Effect of emulsifier and diol class chain extender

Abstract: Novel cationic waterborne polyurethanes (cWPU) were synthesized by step‐growth polymerization of hydroxyl telechelic natural rubber, molecular weight of 2800 g mol−1, toluene‐2,4‐diisocyanate, N‐methyl diethanolamine (NMDEA) as an emulsifier. The chemical structure of cWPU was confirmed by 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The amounts of NMDEA and ethylene glycol under isocyanate (NCO) index of 100 on the properties of cWPU were studied. It was found that cWPU was stabl… Show more

“…Additionally, hydroxy telechelic natural rubber (HTNR) has good elastic properties, excellent flexibility, good green strength, building tack, and low‐temperature flexibility. Our research group had previously developed HTNR as a precursor for producing green polyurethane, that is, polyurethane (PU) foam, 18 PU adhesive, 19 anionic WPU, 20 and cationic WPU 21 . The mechanical properties HTNR‐based WPU have been developed continuously with several techniques such as grafting with acrylate, 22 including chain extender, 20 mixing chitosan for serving green adhesive and coating application, and antimicrobial coating materials 23 .…”

“…Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is largely employed in textile laminating, wood coatings, adhesives and leather nishing due to its high chemical resistance, superior mechanical properties, excellent exibility and remarkable adhesion. [1][2][3][4] However, the high ammability of polyurethane materials limit their application in everyday use. [5][6][7] To endow WPU with ame retardant properties, various halogen-free ame retardants have been introduced, 8-11 among them, phosphorus containing ame retardants have attracted much attention.…”

“…CWPUs exhibit many unique characteristics, such as availability under acidic conditions, adhesion properties, antibacterial properties, and dustproof effects through electrostatic repulsion. [7][8][9][10] These excellent characteristics give CWPUs the great potential to become high value-added materials. 11,12 Nevertheless, the introduction of cationic groups into polyurethane segments could decrease the water resistance and surface hydrophobicity of WPU lms.…”
