Synthesis and characterization of novel organotin carboxylate maleimide monomers and copolymers

Abstract: Abstract. Two novel tributyltin carboxylate maleimide monomers, tributyltin(maleimido)acetate and tributyltin(4-maleimido)benzoate, were synthesized by condensation reaction of maleimidoacetic acid or 4-maleimidobenzoic acid with bis(tributyltin) oxide. Copolymerization of these monomers with styrene was carried in dioxane at 70°C using asobisisobutyronitrile as free radical initiator. The structures of monomers and copolymers were confirmed by FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared), 1 H and 13 C NMR (nuclear magn… Show more

“…The percentage of tin was calculated according to the Gilman and Rosenberg method [ 20 ], and subsequently the copolymer composition (f) was determined as shown in Table 7 . The monomers reactivity ratios and the content of the reaction mixture and the copolymer was calculated according to FR method [ 12 , 13 , 14 ] ( Table 8 ). The FR parameters for DBTM and BA ( Table 6 ) were calculated by plotting the relation between F(f-1)/f and F 2 /f.…”

“…Organotin compounds have important applications in several areas and hence they are made industrially on a large scale [ 11 ]. The organotin moiety is attached to the monomers and copolymers via O-Sn and/or N-Sn bonds [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Acrylic copolymers with pendant organotin moieties find widespread applications as antifouling agents, [ 10 , 16 ] wood preservatives, [ 10 ] fungicides, pesticides, mosquito larvacides, [ 10 , 17 ] heat and light stabilizers in the manufacture of poly(vinyl chloride).…”

“…The acetalization degree was 25%. 4-Maleimidobenzoic acid, tributyltin (2,5-dioxo-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)acetate and tributyltin 4- (2,5-dioxo-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)ben zoate were prepared according to the method described in the literature [29,30]. ]benzoate, 3 was prepared by the condensation reaction of 3,5-bismaleimidobenzoic acid with TBTO in toluene at reflux.…”

“…The IR spectra (Figure 2) revealed the absorption bands at about 1776 cm -1 attributed to the existence of DA adduct resulted from the chemical reaction between furan and maleimide groups and at 1190 cm -1 assigned to ν C-N-C from cycloadduct [24]. The strong absorption band of the >C=O stretching shifted from 1730 cm -1 (in M5) to 1710-1713 cm -1 (in M(1, 3)) due to the interaction between PVF and maleimide, and new absorption bands appeared at 1556-1589, 1460-1465, 1409 cm -1 for M(1, 3) attributed to the nonpolymeric trialkyltin carboxylate in the solid-state (ν COO asym , ν COO sym) [30].…”
