Synthesis and characterization of new aromatic poly(amide–imide)s based on 4‐aryl‐2,6‐bis(4‐trimellitimidophenyl) pyridines

Abstract: New diimide–dicarboxylic acids, ie 4‐phenyl‐2,6‐bis(4‐trimellitimidophenyl)pyridine and 4‐p‐biphenyl‐2,6‐bis‐(4‐trimellitimidophenyl)pyridine, were synthesized by the condensation reaction of 4‐phenyl‐2,6‐bis(4‐aminophenyl)pyridine and 4‐p‐biphenyl‐2,6‐bis(4‐aminophenyl)pyridine with trimellitic anhydride in glacial acetic acid or dimethylformamide. The monomers were fully characterized by FT‐IR and NMR spectroscopies, and elemental analyses. A series of novel poly(amide–imide)s with inherent viscosities of 0.… Show more

“…Conversely, some polymers containing imido side-chain groups that are thermally stable, e.g., phthalimido groups, show high thermal stability, solubility, and processability. For example, polyamides [3,4], polyesters [5], poly(amide-imide)s [6,7], poly(benzimidazole-amide)s [8], poly(ester-imide)s [9], poly(urethane-imide)s [10], and polynorbornenes [11] bearing phthalimido pendent groups indicated excellent thermal properties while maintaining solubility. Thus, most of the polymers bearing phthalimido side-chain groups possess organic main-chains.…”
