Synthesis and Characterization of New Ferrocene‐Containing Ionic Liquids

Abstract: A series of several new families of ferrocene‐containing imidazolium salts were synthesized by etherification of ferrocene methanol, acylation of ferrocene, and amide coupling of ferrocene carboxylic acid. The etherification was achieved by an acid‐catalyzed procedure and very good yields of between 86–93 % were obtained. Next to the nature of the linkage itself, the lengths of the alkyl chains linking the ferrocenyl moiety and the imidazolium group and the nature of the counterions were also varied. Interesti… Show more

“…It should be noted that this strategy works well for compounds 4 and 6 but not for 5. Similarly disparate reactivities were observed by Hirsch et al when they tried to use deprotonated ferrocenemethanol to react with dibromoalkanes; 48 the etherification reactions were successful when the number of carbon atoms is three or five, whereas no etherification was observed with four. Instead, compound 5 can be obtained by reacting ferrocenedimethanol and 3-buten-1-ol in the presence of catalytic acetic acid.…”

“…We prepared AcS(CH 2 ) 4 Fc(CH 2 ) 4 SAc from native ferrocene in three steps using well-established procedures (see Supplementary Methods , Supplementary Fig. 8 and refs 47 and 48 ). All compounds were characterized with 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and ESI HRMS.…”

“…A ferrocene-based RAIL, [FcC 6 ImC 1 ][TFSI], was synthesized according to the report of Gharib and Hirsch. 19 A viologen-based RAIL, [C 4 VC 7 ][TFSI] 2 , was synthesized as our previous reports. 16,17 Figure 1a shows the CV for the mixed solution of [FcC 6 ImC 1 ][TFSI] and [C 4 VC 7 ][TFSI] 2 at a sweep rate (ν) of 50 mV s −1 .…”
