Synthesis and characterization of multifunctional magnetic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microspheres for embolization of blood vessel

Abstract: The magnetic hydrogel microspheres exhibited the specific fluidity-like iodized oil, but were able to form solid embolus. Because of the advantages of this novel material, it is expected to get extensive application in the clinic embolotherapy.

“…In medicine, PVA is convenient because it has low protein absorption and chemical resistance [121]. Thus, it has been used for applications such as controlled drug delivery systems [106], soft contact lenses [96,106], eye drops [122], embolization particles [123,124], tissue adhesion barriers [125,126], transdermal patches and jellies for the skin [115], and as artificial cartilage and meniscus [106,127]. Moreover, PVA helps dissipate heat and prolongs electronic devices' lifetime [128], is helpful for wastewater treatment [129][130][131][132], as well as in the industrial, commercial, and food sectors [106,[133][134][135][136][137][138][139][140].…”

“…Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has good biocompatibility , and elasticity, so it is the most commonly used material for fabricating embolic microspheres. Currently, the methods for fabricating PVA microspheres mainly include emulsification, followed by chemical cross-linking, ,, spray drying, , freezing–thawing, , and microfluidic technology. For example, Li et al dispersed PVA aqueous solution into the mixed solution of Span 80 and n -heptane by stirring to form water-in-oil droplets and then added glutaraldehyde (GA) as a chemical cross-linking agent to prepare PVA microspheres . Avcioglu et al prepared PVA powder particles by the spray drying method .…”

“…12 Currently, a wide variety of functional polyvinyl alcohol embolization microspheres have been reported. These include CT/MR imaging capability, [13][14][15][16] tissue adhesion, 13 magnetic responsiveness and magneto-thermal properties, 17 and so forth. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, PVA embolic microspheres have good hydrophilicity, which is not helpful for hydrophobic drug loading.…”
