Synthesis and Characterization of Methylacrylic Acid and Butyl Acrylate Grafted onto Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Terpolymer

Abstract: A multi-component polymer of methacrylic acid (MAA) and butyl acrylate (BA) grafted onto ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) terpolymer was synthesized in toluene using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator. The effect of EPDM/MAA-BA ratio and MAA/BA ratio on the grafting ratio of polymerization was investigated. The products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), surface energy, inherent viscosity, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results… Show more

“…The spectrum of EVA presents a typical absorption at 1736 cm −1 related to CO and absorption at 1244 cm −1 which is characteristic peaks related to COC. In addition, the characteristic peaks at 1371, 1461, 2852, and 2924 cm −1 are assigned to the CH 3 symmetric bending vibration, CH 2 rocking vibration, aliphatic CH 2 symmetric and asymmetric stretching vibrations, respectively . Apart from all the above characteristic peaks, the spectrum of EVA‐g‐VTMS shows an additional absorption band at 1090 cm −1 which is assigned to the SiOCH 3 groups , demonstrating that the VTMS has been grafted successfully onto the EVA chain.…”
