Synthesis and characterization of mesoporous SBA-15 and SBA-16 as carriers to improve albendazole dissolution rate

Abstract: Albendazole (ABZ, anti-parasitic active pharmaceutical ingredient) is a crystalline low water-soluble drug, thus the dissolution rate in gastrointestinal fluids is limited. Consequently, the improvement of the water solubility and dissolution rate of ABZ implies a great challenge for a more efficient treatment of hydatidosis. In this context, SBA-15 and SBA-16 ordered mesoporous silica materials were synthetized and loaded with ABZ. X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, nitrogen physisorption manometry, parti… Show more

“…Hu et al [8] found that SBA-16-based 3D continuous and interconnected porous particles can reduce the diffusion resistance and facilitate transport of drugs compare to 2D cylindrical channel materials such as MCM-41. However, SBA-15 had shown higher drug loading ability than SBA-16 [9]. Two-dimensional hexagonal structured SBA-15, one of the most important types of mesoporous silicas, has large pore sizes (5-30 nm), an ordered structure, and surface silanol groups that can facilitate intermolecular hydrogen bonding with different drugs promoting their bioavailability, which is especially important for highly hydrophobic drugs; in addition, pore-mouth functionalization can avoid a premature drug release by means of molecular gates [10].…”

“…The located between 1222.87 and 958.62 correspond to CH and NH in-plane bending vibrati -deformation. The last region of bands, 923.90-597.93 cm −1 consist in skeletal vibrations, plane bending, NH2 rocking and C-S stretching vibrations [22][23][24][25]. e main characteristic bands observed in the pure PU spectrum were assigned as follows: haracteristic band at 3500-3250 cm −1 with a peak at around 3346; the C-H band at 3000-2 ith a peak at around 2873, and the band corresponding to the fingerprint region, at 750-1…”

“…HMSNs are excellent candidates for loading traditional medicine facing the issue of their poor solubility. The ability to improve bioavailability has been demonstrated in many drugs with poor solubilities such as resveratrol and albendazole [ 28 , 29 ]. The high volume of pores provides a large contact area to the vehicle solution, leading to better drug loading and release.…”
