These sorbents have unique properties, which include high specific surface areas, high pore volumes, a range of pore sizes, and functionalities that provide methods for binding radionuclides and other contaminants, generally through physisorption, chemisorption, or a combination thereof. This combination of properties and functionalities makes these types of materials ideal for use as sorbents for capturing radionuclides. The primary base materials that will be discussed in this paper include Ag 0-functionalized silica aerogels, Ag +-impregnated aluminosilicate aerogels, Ag 0-functionalized aluminosilicate aerogels, metal-impregnated (non-Ag) aluminosilicate aerogels and xerogels, sulfide-based aerogels, and carbon-based aerogel composites. For the capture of I 2(g) , the materials reported herein show some of the highest iodine loadings ever reported for inorganic sorbents. For the capture of ionic species, these materials also show promise as next-generation materials for active radionuclide remediation. This progress report describes materials fabrication, general properties, and environmental remediation applications.

A series of asymmetric cordierite ceramics with hierarchical porous structure were prepared and characterized. The macroporous support was obtained from natural raw materials (bauxite, silica sand, kaolinite, talc, and alumina) via ceramic technology. The prepared ceramic discs were characterized by a narrow pore size distribution. The average pore size was about 9.5 µm, and the open porosity was estimated to be 30%. Coating the discs with micro/mesoporous cordierite layer was performed using the sol-gel approach. Three-component sols were obtained from organic or inorganic precursors. Corresponding gels were calcined at 1200 ℃ to form the cordierite structure. The nature of precursor was found to affect the pore volume distribution. Narrow pore volume distribution was observed when organic precursors were used. Another key factor to control the parameters of final material was the drying condition. Supercritical drying of the gels has allowed us to increase the surface area in two orders of magnitude comparing with conventional drying procedure.

2016): Observation of the superstructural diffraction peak in the nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes: simulation of the structure, Fullerenes, Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures, A superstructural peak at ~12 in X-ray diffraction patterns of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes compared to the undoped carbon nanotubes was observed and assigned to the formation of spatially ordered defects. The simulation of the N-CNT structure using the graphitic g-C 3 N 4 phase and turbostratic ordering made it possible to propose a new model of the spatially ordered defects in the N-CNT layer, which consist of clusters of carbon vacancies and pyridinelike nitrogen. A correlation between this type of defects and electrical conductivity of the N-CNTs is defined.
