In this study, we developed a new chemi-resistive, flexible and selective ammonia (NH3) gas sensor. The sensor was prepared by depositing thin film of polyaniline-cobalt ferrite (PAni-CoFe2O4) nanocomposite on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) through an in situ chemical oxidative polymerization method. The prepared PAni-CoFe2O4 nanocomposite and flexible PET-PAni-CoFe2O4 sensor were evaluated for their thermal stability, surface morphology and materials composition. The response to NH3 gas of the developed sensor was examined thoroughly in the range of 1–50 ppm at room temperature. The sensor with 50 wt% CoFe2O4 NPs content showed an optimum selectivity to NH3 molecules, with a 118.3% response towards 50 ppm in 24.3 s response time. Furthermore, the sensor showed good reproducibility, ultra-low detection limit (25 ppb) and excellent flexibility. In addition, the relative humidity effect on the sensor performance was investigated. Consequently, the flexible PET-PAni-CoFe2O4 sensor is a promising candidate for trace-level on-site sensing of NH3 in wearable electronic or portable devices.

The applications of nanostructures have been limited by their different toxicities. So, the investigation of these toxicities is necessary before nanostructure application. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles on bone density in Wistar rat. Al2O3 nanoparticle was prepared by the sol-gel method. Characterization was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Sixty-four male adult Wistar rats were divided into eight groups including six groups intravenously treated with Al2O3 nanoparticle at concentrations of 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, and 1000 µg/ml: one group received food and water as the control group, and one group received food and water as well as intravenously distilled water as an injection control group. After 41 days, bone density was analyzed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). According to X-ray diffraction, the average particle size for Al2O3 nanoparticles was 20.85 nm. The data of densitometry showed that the bone density of right and left foot was reduced in concentrations of 250, 500, and 1000 µg/ml that were statistically significant in comparison with the control group. The reduction of bone density was increased with the enhancement of nanostructures concentration. The effect of Al2O3 nanoparticles on bone density was similar in the left and right legs. Histopatholological assessment also showed that Al2O3 nanoparticles (250, 500, and 1000 µg/ml) lead to significant reduction of trabeculae. Empty lacunae are observed in these three groups. Considering that high concentrations of Al2O3 nanoparticles had toxicity on bone tissue, it must be used by more caution, especially its use as a coating in different devices such as implants, surgical instruments, and bone prostheses.

Nafion-modified coatings can enhance the detection performance of bismuth film electrodes (BFEs). In this work, different coatings (graphene sheets (GS), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), activated carbon (AC), bismuth (Bi), and bismuth trioxide (Bi 2 O 3 )) were prepared by Nafion-assisted electrophoretic deposition (EPD). For successful EPD in ethanol, 0.1 mM NaOH + 0.1 g•L −1 Nafion is suggested as a suitable biadditive. With the in situ formation of a BFE on a coating via the square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) method, the GS coating prepared by Nafion-assisted EPD exhibits better detection sensitivity and repeatability than the GS coating prepared by the drop method. Therefore, based on the result that the coatings of GS, CNT, AC, Bi, and Bi 2 O 3 can be prepared by EPD with the biadditives of NaOH + Nafion, as well as the fact that both Nafion and EPD can help improve the detection sensitivity of the BFEs formed on these coatings, a novel and general strategy for designing a series of Nafion-modified single-component coatings or bicomposite coatings to form BFEs with good detection performance can be feasibly realized via electrophoretic codeposition.
