Synthesis and characterization of chemiluminescent conducting polyluminol via biocatalysis

Abstract: The enzyme catalyzed polymerization of luminol (5-amino-2, 3-dihydroxy-1, 4-phthalazinedione) in the presence of polystyrenesulphonate (SPS) is introduced. Polymerization was achieved using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as a biocatalyst in a phosphate buffer at pH 8. A green, water-soluble conducting PLUM/SPS complex was obtained. The physico-chemical properties of the product, including possible photoluminescence of the PLUM/SPS complex, were studied. The PLUM/SPS complex was shown to be a chemiluminescent (CL… Show more

“…The oxidative polymerization of luminol (5-amino-2,3-dihydroxy-1,4-phthalazinedione) with HRP/H 2 O 2 in a phosphate buffer at pH 8 in the presence of SPS was reported by Nabid et al ( 2011 ). According to the authors, a green, water-dispersible conducting polyluminol/SPS complex was obtained, a chemiluminescent material which is highly sensitive towards Fe 3+ ions.…”

“…In the absence of a suitable template aniline polymerizes with poor regioselectivity yielding complex, insoluble and non conducting polymers. However, e.g., in the presence of negatively charged PSS (and in the presence of protonated aniline, i.e., at suitable pHs) formation of the conducting emeraldine form is strongly favored (Figure 12) [27,[73][74][75][76][77][78][79].…”

“…It offers significant advantages, summarized in the employed mild reaction conditions mainly in terms of temperature and toxicity, and high selectivity of enzymes, avoiding protection-deprotection strategies and resulting in improved quality/performance of end products. For example, Nabid 68 and colleagues developed horseradish peroxidase (HRP) catalyzed polymerization of luminol in the presence of 0.04 mM polystyrenesulphonate (SPS) template to yield a water-soluble PLUM (Scheme 8B). Among the three different pH values ( pH = 2, 4, and 8) that have been utilized, pH = 8 showed the most optimum conditions for the adequate synthesis of polyluminol, due to the fact that the activity of the HRP enzyme decreases abruptly in acidic media (e.g.…”
