A novel composite adsorbent was prepared by using cellulose acetate modified with zwitterion, for zwitterionic cellulose acetate (ZCA), then blended with graphene oxide (GO). The adsorbent was prepared by solgel method and used to remove Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ from aqueous solution. The morphologies, surface chemical structures, and crystallinity of the obtained adsorbents were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), respectively. N2 adsorptiondesorption measurements revealed that the surface area and pore volume were 45.3 m 2 g -1 and 0.249 cm 3 g -1 . For adsorption, effect of time, and pH, adsorbate concentration was investigated; different adsorption models were also evaluated. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity was 32.0 mg/g for Cu 2+ and 27.6 mg/g for Cd 2+ , observed at pH 5.5 and 298 K. Simultaneously, the adsorption isotherms were well-fitted to the Langmuir model, and kinetics study showed that the adsorption process was fitted well by the pseudo-second-order model. Further regeneration experiments revealed that the adsorption of ZCA/GO was about 90% of the initial saturation adsorption capacity after repeated use 5 times, indicating that they are promising absorbents for practical application in industry.

The degradation of Reactive Red 120 dye (RR-120) in synthetic waters was studied. Two processes were considered: homogeneous sono-Fenton with iron(II) sulfate and heterogeneous sono-Fenton with synthetic goethite and goethite deposited onto silica and calcite sand (modified catalysts GS and GC, respectively). In 60 min of reaction, the homogeneous sono-Fenton process allowed a degradation of 98.10 %, in contrast with 96.07 % for the heterogeneous sono-Fenton process with goethite at pH 3.0. The removal of RR-120 increased when the modified catalysts were used instead of bare goethite. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) measurements showed that the highest TOC and COD removals were achieved with the homogeneous sono-Fenton process. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5) measurements allowed confirmed that the highest value of BOD 5 /COD was achieved with a heterogeneous sono-Fenton process (0.88±0.04 with the modified catalyst GC), demonstrating that the biodegradability of the residual organic compounds was remarkably improved.

There are limited structural studies of iron oxide coated cellulose materials despite their use as adsorbents for the removal of waterborne arsenic species. This study reports on the structural characterization of cellulose-iron oxide composites at variable iron oxide content using spectroscopy methods (Raman, solids 13 C NMR, powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD)) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Iron oxide was supported onto cellulose (ca. 25 wt.%) without significant loss in the Fe coating efficiency, where the accessibility of the biopolymer-OH groups affect the coating efficiency and yield of the iron oxide-cellulose composite. Isotherm adsorption studies for cellulose, iron oxide species and the cellulose composite materials with roxarsone (3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid) were studied to characterize the surface chemical properties of these potential adsorbent materials.
