Synthesis and Characterization of Bismaleimide Modified Vinyl Ester Monomer-Unsaturated Polyester Intercrosslinked Hybrid Matrices

Abstract: Intercrosslinked hybrid matrices were developed from N,N′-bismaleimido-4,4′-diphenyl methane (BMI) modified vinyl ester monomer (VEM), namely cyclohexyl-1,1′-bis[4-(γ-2-methylphenoxy)-α-hydroxypropylacrylate]-unsaturated polyester (UP) resin. BMI-modified VEM-UP hybrid matrices were characterized for their mechanical properties, viz. tensile strength, flexural strength, unnotched izod impact strength and hardness as per ASTM standards. Data obtained from thermal studies indicated that the introduction of vinyl… Show more

“…VE is an inexpensive structural grade resin that represents an alternative to the traditional and more expensive epoxy resin systems often used in automotive applications due to its good strength, toughness, and chemical and corrosion resistance [8][9][10][11][12][13]. VE resins can be easily controlled in liquid forms at room temperature and provide enhanced chemical properties in comparison to other thermoset resins such as polyester or epoxy [14][15][16][17][18][19].…”

“…In contrast to the static strengths, the fatigue durability of composites increased proportionally to the content of glass fiber in the matrix, regardless to CF length.2 of 15 to those of the epoxy resins and equivalent processing techniques to those of the polyesters while being more flexible and having higher fracture toughness. VE resin also has good wettability, has strong resistance against acid and alkalis, cures at room temperature, has low moisture absorption, and has good mechanical properties [8][9][10][11]. Carbon fibers have low density (1.8-2.0 g/cm 3 ).…”
