Synthesis and characterization of a fully aromatic polyazomethine with rotaxane architecture

Abstract: This paper reports the preparation and characterization of a new aromatic polyazomethine with rotaxane architecture. The complex of β-cyclodextrin and 1,4-phenylenediamine was treated with N-n-butyl-3,6-diformylcarbazole, which is large enough to prevent dethreading. The polycondensation reaction was performed in N,N-dimethylformamide leading to polyazomethine soluble in polar solvents. Measurements made by gel permeation chromatography of the dimethylformamide-soluble (DMF) soluble polyazomethine show the pre… Show more

“…Inclusion complex formation is favored by hydrophobic interactions and the polymerization is usually carried out in water. [19] We have prepared polyrotaxane IMWs by aqueous Suzuki polycondensation of diboronic acids with diiodides. The chemistry works most efficiently when both monomers are soluble in the basic aqueous reaction media; diboronic acids are naturally soluble under these conditions but the aryl iodide component needs watersolubilizing groups such as carboxylates or sulfonates.…”

“…To our best knowledge a phenanthroline triether copolymer having rotaxane architecture in every structural unit has not been reported prior to this work. Moreover, there have been only a few reports on this type of polyrotaxane with other chemical structures [8][9][10][11].…”

“…The supramolecular aggregates are nanometer-sized molecular wires having ~1.5 nm in diameter (equal with the outer diameter of β-CD) ( Figure 5) [64]. All rotaxane polyimines are more hygroscopic and soluble in polar solvents in comparison with the polymers without rotaxane structure [58][59][60][61][62][63][64]. Figure 5 > …”
