Synthesis and characteristics of nanocrystalline materials in Ti, B, C and N containing system

Abstract: Abstract:In this work, the results of investigations of manufacturing ceramic materials on the basis of Ti, B, C and N containing systems are presented. The nanocrystalline ceramics were synthesized using a non-hydrolytic sol-gel method. The process was carried out in two stages. In the first low-temperature stage the precursor was obtained. The synthesis of ceramic phases, however, was conducted in the second high-temperature stage, in an argon atmosphere. Depending on the initial composition of the mixtures,… Show more

“…After these processes the nanocrystalline powders were added to 316L austenitic steel. The details of preparation of the Ti-B-C system were described elsewhere [14]. The samples were characterized using Xray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods.…”

“…Fracture and wear resistance of TiC-TiB 2 composites obtained from TiB 2 and TiC powders is higher than that of single TiB 2 and TiC phases. For this reason, these composites are used for manufacturing matrices and cutting tools as well * corresponding author; e-mail: Tomasz.Bodziony@zut.edu.pl as heat exchanger elements and combustion engine elements [14,15].…”

“…They require heat treatment, which is performed in inert atmosphere. Previous investigations of nc-TiC x /C system demonstrated the existence of crystallite growth minimum with a considerable improvement of stoichiometric ratio C:Ti in the optimal parameters during the annealing process [7,8,9]. The kinetic analysis is the base for elaboration of optimal annealing process conditions.…”

“…The evolution of CO 2 above 700 °C can be attributed to the oxidation of a bulk titanium carbide phase. 6,25,26 Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) exothermic events during heating under a 60% O 2 atmosphere were commensurate and coincident with mass gains in the TGA. Heating at a rate of 25 °C/min caused powders heat treated at 150 and 425 °C to display a sharp exothermic event at 513 and 522 °C, respectively.…”
