“…In all three structures the pyridyl rings are rotated such that the nitrogen atoms are pointing away from the bicyclic ring nitrogen atoms, whilst in metal complexes the pyridyl rings rotate by 180°, and thus a pocket is created whereby the ligand can coordinate to the metal atom through all four nitrogen atoms. [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22] The pyridine rings in 2, 3 and 4 thus exhibit opposite chirality, in contrast to the situation observed for the piperidone 1. This arrangement is not as energetically favourable in terms of sterics, but the energy gained by the formation of the stable bicyclic nonanone skeleton overcomes this.…”
