Purpose: The synthesis of ten new naphthyridine-hydrazone derivatives and subsequent evaluation of their antimicrobial activities were aimed in this present work. Material and Methods: The structure of the compounds was elucidated by 1H-NMR and MS spectral data. Additionally the compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity against a panel of pathogenic bacteria and fungus strains. The panel of microorganisms Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes and Candida albicans were tested in vitro using a microdilution method. Results: All compounds showed significant antimicrobial activity against S. typhimurium and C. albicans when compared with reference agents. Conclusion: All synthesized compounds had significant antifungal activity when compared with ketoconazole. Key Words: Naphthyridine, Quinolone, Hydrazone, Antimicrobial Activity

A series of chloro-and fluoro-substituted thiocarboxyhydrazones, 2-(2-chlorobenzylidene)-N-methylhydrazinecarbothioamide (1), 2-(4-fluorobenzylidene)-N-methylhydrazinecarbothioamide (2), and 2-(2-chloro-4-fluorobenzylidene)-N-methylhydrazinecarbothioamide (3), were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectra, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Structures of the three compounds are similar, but with slight modification by chloro-and fluoro-substitute groups. The crystal structures of the compounds are stabilized by hydrogen bonds and π···π interactions. The antimicrobial activity of the compounds shows that they are effective against some bacteria.

A series of 2-(4-substitutedmethylphenyl)propionic acid derivatives (6a-6m) were synthesized, characterized and evaluated for cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme inhibitory and antimicrobial activity. Test compounds that exhibited good COX inhibition and antibacterial activity were further screened for their cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. Compounds 6h and 6l showed better COX-1 and COX-2 inhibition when compared to ibuprofen. Inhibition potency of these compounds against COX-2 was very close to that of nimesulide. The compounds 6d, 6h, 6l and 6m displayed promising antibacterial property when compared to chloramphenicol. However, the compound 6l was emerged as the best dual COX inhibitory-antibacterial agent in this study. The ADME prediction of the compounds revealed that they may have a good pharmacokinetic profile. Docking results of the compounds 6h and 6l with COX-1 (PDB ID: 1EQG) also exhibited a strong binding profile. ARTICLE HISTORY
