“Biochar” (BC) is the solid residue recovered from the thermal cracking of biomasses in an oxygen-poor atmosphere. Recently, BC has been increasingly explored as a sustainable, inexpensive, and viable alternative to traditional carbonaceous fillers for the development of polymer-based composites. In fact, BC exhibits high thermal stability, high surface area, and electrical conductivity; moreover, its main properties can be properly tuned by controlling the conditions of the production process. Due to its intriguing characteristics, BC is currently in competition with high-performing fillers in the formulation of multi-functional polymer-based composites, inducing both high mechanical and electrical properties. Moreover, BC can be derived from a huge variety of biomass sources, including post-consumer agricultural wastes, hence providing an interesting opportunity toward a “zero waste” circular bioeconomy. This work aims at providing a comprehensive overview of the main achievements obtained by combining BC with several thermoplastic and thermosetting matrices. In particular, the effect of the introduction of BC on the overall performance of different polymer matrices will be critically reviewed, highlighting the influence of differently synthesized BC on the final performance and behavior of the resulting composites. Lastly, a comparative perspective on BC with other carbonaceous fillers will be also provided.

This study aims to determine the effect of particle size and material composition on the performance of resin-based brake pads. Experiments were carried out by mixing 75% UPR with durian peel and banana midribs fibers using ratios of 1/1, 3/2, and 2/3 at particle sizes of 104 and 250 μm. The experimental results shows that decreasing the particle size improves the mechanical properties of brake pads, but gives a high wear value and a low coefficient of friction. In addition, an increase in the percentage of banana midrib fibers as a whole provides better brake pad performance. The results of the comparison between commercial-based brake pads confirm that agricultural waste is potential as an alternative to friction materials in brake pads. Brake pad with a fiber ratio of 2/3 104 μm had highest values of hardness, wear and friction coefficient, namely 20.33 N/cm3, 2.02 x 10-4 g/s.mm2, and 0.2465. while the 1/1 250 μm and 3/2 250 μm had the lowest coefficient values and compressive strength of 0.1195 and 9.14 N/cm3. This study demonstrates the use of biomass waste as an alternative to friction material to overcome the dangerous problem of using asbestos in brake pads.

The global market of carbon-reinforced plastic represents one of the largest economic platforms. This sector is dominated by carbon black (CB) produced from traditional oil industry. Recently, high technological fillers such as carbon fibres or nanostructured carbon (i.e. carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphene oxide) fillers have tried to exploit their potential but without economic success. So, in this chapter we are going to analyse the use of an unconventional carbon filler called biochar. Biochar is the solid residue of pyrolysis and can be a solid and sustainable replacement for traditional and expensive fillers. In this chapter, we will provide overview of the last advancement in the use of biochar as filler for the production of reinforced plastics.
