Synthesis and anti-oxidant activity of coumarinyl chalcones

Abstract: Background The ability to inhibit oxidative stress has been established as the prime mechanism in treatment of several disease conditions. In view of this, two new series of coumarin–chalcone hybrid molecules (5a–o and 6a–o) were synthesized using various aromatic aldehydes. The structures of the compounds were confirmed using IR, 1HNMR and mass spectral analyses. The compounds were evaluated for their antioxidant potential against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl radicals in s… Show more

“…Whereas that of ascorbic acid was 2.17 µg/mL. These results are almost identical to those described in the literature [25][26][27][28][29]. At a concentration of 10 µg/mL, the inhibition percentage of the third chalcone was 87.71%.…”

“…This is contrary to the first two chalcones. Indeed, the methyl group (having an electrodonor effect) present in methoxy could also have a stabilizing effect of the chalcone-DPPH complex [27][28][29].…”

“…5) For instance, two naturally occurring chalcones have been successfully isolated from Caesalpinia sappan and Piper hispidum, possessing biological activities. 6) From the past decades, the natural as well as the synthetic chalcones have been known to exhibit various pharmacological significance such as antibacterial, [7][8][9] antidiabetic, [10][11][12] antioxidant, [13][14][15] anticancer, [16][17][18] and anti-inflammatory [19][20][21] activities. Additionally, chalcone-based molecules have gained considerable attention due to their role as antitumor 22) and cytotoxic 23) agents.…”
