Syntheses of Colorless and Transparent Polyimide Membranes for Microfiltration

Abstract: Herein, poly(amic acid) (PAA) was synthesized using 4,4’-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) as a dianhydride and 2,2-bis(3-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane (6FAm) and 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane (6FAm-OH) as diamines. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) at various contents (0–5.0 wt%) was blended with PAA to prepare a composite material. Then, colorless and transparent polyimide (CPI) composite films were prepared by applying various stages of heat treatment using the PAA/PVA blend… Show more

“…These hydrogen bonds between the CPI main chains interfere with free chain mobility, resulting in an increase in T g . Similar papers have been previously published [ 30 ]. Figure 3 shows the DSC thermograms of the CPI blend films containing various PVA wt% contents.…”

“…Numerous publications report that imide-based membranes are extensively used for water separation since they possess good mechanical stability, high thermal resistance and high water vapor permeability [ 57 , 58 , 59 ]. It is known that the imide group increases the polarity of the molecule and provides an environment for water molecules to form hydrogen bonding [ 60 , 61 , 62 ]. Hence, the introduction of this group into the polymer chain would lead to an improvement in the interaction between the water molecule and the polymer.…”

“…Therefore, optically transparent PI (CPI) can be synthesized by changing the monomer structure. Kim and Chang [ 53 ] blended poly (amic acid) (PAA) and PVA with PI, and then, they heat-treated them to obtain a blend film of CPI and PVA. After removing PVA, a porous CPI film with high transmittance was obtained.…”
