Syntheses of Aromatic/Heterocyclic Derived Bioplastics with High Thermal/Mechanical Performance

Abstract: Biobased plastics derived from renewable starting materials are indispensable for the establishment of low-carbon green-sustainable society. However, aromatic biobased plastics are hardly developed although they are expected to show very high thermal/mechanical performance. The cinnamates are one of the aromatic biobased renewable materials, and cinnamatesbased photofunctional polyesters were prepared which showed high thermomechanical properties. On the other hand, environmentally degradable heterocyclic poly… Show more

“…The importance of heterocyclic compounds has been known to humans for a long time, so the synthesis of this family of compounds has been on the agenda of many chemists and pharmacists. Various articles about the preparation and application of heterocyclic compounds are published in the literature every day. These compounds are widely used in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, food industries, pesticides, and herbicides. One interesting heterocycle is the four-membered heterocycle of β-lactams, where the ring plays a key and effective role in the action of drugs. β-Lactams, also called azitidine 2-ones, are quaternary cyclic amides that contain a nitrogen atom attached to a carbonyl group. Antimicrobial, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antiseizure, antibiotic, anticancer, and antiviral properties have been reported for this family. , In addition, the β-lactam ring acts as a synthon for the synthesis of amino acid derivatives, peptides, polyamino alcohols, and esters .…”

“…Turning biomass into valuable chemical feedstock plays an increasingly important role in the commodity plastics market due to concerns about global warming and depletion of nonrenewable fossil resources. Thus, the development of renewable building blocks for the next generation of plastics is now blooming. Furfural, which can be produced from lignocellulosic biomass (e.g., sawdust, corncobs, wheat bran, and sugar bagasse), has long been regarded as a versatile and renewable platform for biobased chemicals and biofuels. The production of dicarboxylic acid building blocks from furfural has recently been studied extensively and has exhibited great potentials. For instance, both rigid furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and flexible succinic acid (SA) can be synthesized from furfural (Figure ). Polyethylene furanoate (PEF) synthesized from FDCA is being considered as a potential substitute for the widely used plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET). SA has been used in making polybutylene succinate (PBS), a polyester with applications in food packaging. In addition, diacids have a wide range of other applications in biocompatible materials, thermoplastics, packaging, coatings, drug discovery, etc. These successful examples motivate us to pursue novel biobased diacid building blocks using photoreaction.…”
