Synovial Fluid Omentin-1 Levels are Inversely Correlated with Radiographic Severity of Knee Osteoarthritis

Abstract: Synovial fluid omentin-1 levels showed an independent and negative correlation with radiographic severity of the disease in patients with knee OA. Omentin-1 in SF might serve as a potential biomarker for reflecting the degenerative process of primary knee OA.

“…Stwierdzono zmniejszone stężenie tego białka u pacjentów z aktywną chorobą Leśniowskiego-Crohna, które w większym stopniu korelowało z nasileniem choroby zapalnej jelit niż stę-żenie białka C-reaktywnego. “…The studies by Duan et al, 24 , Hao et al, 25 and Xu et al, 26 suggest that adipokines are involved in various forms of OA whereas the study by van Spil and co-workers 14 suggests that adipokines are not involved in cartilage metabolism. Clearly, this is an active area of research and further studies are required to explain the differing outcomes of these studies.…”

“…Therefore, this adipokine has the capacity of modulating glucose metabolism and insulin signaling. Xu et al, 26 used ELISAs to measure omentin-1 levels in serum and synovial fluid of patients with knee OA and correlated the values with radiographic disease severity using the KellgreneLawrence (KL) grading system. There were no significant differences in serum omentin-1 levels between patients with OA and healthy controls.…”

“…3 All joints may be affected, but the knee is the most clinically significant site of primary OA involvement. 4 The causes of disease onset and individual variation in susceptibility and progression remain elusive. A suite of OA risk factors has been identified, including genetic variation, age, sex, obesity, reproductive status (e.g., postmenopausal) in females, mechanical stresses, leg muscle strength, and related parameters, and history of previous joint trauma.…”
