Synopsis of Australasian Microgastrinae (Hymenoptera : Braconidae), with a key to genera and description of new taxa

Abstract: The genera of microgastrine braconid wasps present in the Australasian region (defined as Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, New Guinea, Solomon Is, Fiji Is, Samoan Is, Cook Is, but not French Polynesia) are reviewed. An illustrated key to genera, comments on their taxonomy, and information on the distribution and host relationships of species are provided. Following examination of holotypes, the generic placement of all species recorded from the region is reassessed since a recent generic reclassification… Show more

“…Although C. fl avipes is considered endemic to the Indo-Australian region, its status within Australia is unknown. Based on external morphology, the native parasitoid species, Apanteles nonagriae Olliff 1893, was synonymised with C. fl avipes (Austin & Dangerfi eld 1992). Records of A. nonagriae in Australia extend back to the 1920s when it was fi rst recorded parasitising the native stem borer Phragmatiphila truncata (Walker 1856) (now Bathytricha truncata) in South Mulgrave, Australia in sugarcane (Jarvis 1927).…”

“…Another character has been pointed out to separate the two genera: the presence of an epicnemial carina in Snellenius, which is absent in Microplitis (Mason 1981, Austin and Dangerfield 1992. The presence of an epicnemial carina is extremely rare within Microgastrinae; it occurs in only one other genus (i.e., Fornicia) (Mason 1981, Whitifield et al 2002.…”
