Synonymy of two monobasic Anurophorinae genera (Collembola: Isotomidae) from the Antarctic Continent

Abstract: Two monotypic endemic genera, Gressittacantha and Neocryptopygus, from Continental Antarctica, and erected on a single character respectively, are here synonymised with Cryptopygus, a genus with two already described species on the Antarctic Continent. A table of diagnostic characters for the now four Cryptopygus species from the Antarctic Continent is provided and comments made on habitats and Antarctic collembolan diversity. A possible new species of Cryptopygus from the Antarctic Continent is foreshadowed.

“…Although poor compared to Europe, the diversity of South Africa Collembola is increasingly better understood due to international collaborations since 2008 (Janion et al 2011a(Janion et al , b, 2012Janion-Scheepers et al 2013, 2015Potapov et al 2011). The family Isotomidae, which include the dominant Collembola in soil and moss habitats of South Africa, has been particularly little studied, and currently consists of 19 confirmed described species (Janion-Scheepers et al 2015).…”

“…Haplotype screening for this species revealed the presence of at least three well-differentiated phylogroups and a plausible specific boundary between peninsular and continental specimens (Torricelli et al 2010). Recently, Greenslade (2015) has synonymized the monospecific genus Gressittacantha with Cryptopygus, and changed the name of the species from terranova to terranovus. Therefore, in this study we have applied the new name for this isotomid species endemic to Victoria Land.…”

“…The genus Cryptopygus Willem, 1902 sensu stricto has not received its modern generic diagnosis and most of its “austral” species need to be revised (Rusek 2002, Deharveng et al 2005, Jordana et al 2009, Potapov et al 2013, Greenslade 2015). Several species related to Cryptopygus antarcticus Willem, 1902 (the type species of Cryptopygus ) are common in the high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere and form a clear taxonomic group.…”
