Synergistics of Carboxymethyl Chitosan and Mangosteen Extract as Enhancing Moisturizing, Antioxidant, Antibacterial, and Deodorizing Properties in Emulsion Cream

Abstract: Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCH) from native chitosan of high molecular weight (H, 310–375 kDa) was synthesized for improving water solubility. The water solubility of high-molecular-weight carboxymethyl chitosan (H-CMCH) was higher than that of native chitosan by 89%. The application of H-CMCH as enhancing the moisturizer in mangosteen extract deodorant cream was evaluated. Different concentrations of H-CMCH (0.5–2.5%) were investigated in physicochemical characteristics of creams, including appearance, phase se… Show more

“…Thus, at pH between 6.5 and 8, the chitosan chains show ζ = 0 or near to this value, and therefore electrostatic interactions are limited [ 9 , 10 , 11 ]. However, the chitosan backbone can be modified to adjust its physicochemical properties (e.g., water solubility) and control its chemical interaction according to the application requirements [ 12 , 13 , 14 ], boosting the performance. Indeed, unlike chitin and cellulose, the presence of amino groups allows to perform chemical reactions specific to this reactive site.…”

“…Proper care helps to keep the skin in good condition and appearance. An example of the cosmetics industry drawing inspiration from biomedical sciences is the already mentioned beauty masks similar to wound dressings, as well as the encapsulation of active ingredients using chitosan [ 9 , 102 , 103 , 104 ].…”

“…Hair conditioning cosmetics with chitosan can fix the structure of the hair by forming a film on its surface. This action reflects on the appearance of hairs, which are softer and thicker [ 103 ]. Kojima et al checked chitosan’s ability to penetrate into the hair with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS).…”
