Synergistic Methodology Based on Ion Exchange and Biodegradation Mechanisms Applied for Metal Complex Dye Removal from Waste Waters

Abstract: This study investigates the synergistic effects of ion exchange and biodegradation methods to remove the Acid Blue 193 also called Gryfalan Navy Blue RL (GNB) dye from wastewater. Ion exchange studies were performed using a strongly basic anion exchange resin Amberlite IRA 400. The equilibrium was characterized by a kinetic and thermodynamic points of view, establishing that the sorption of the GNB dye was subject to the Freundlich isotherm model with R2 = 0.8710. Experimental results showed that the activat… Show more

“…Therefore, the ion exchange process is the main mechanism that governs adsorption process, but surface interactions mediated by van der Waals and π-π interactions, which occur between aromatic structure of AB 113 and IRA 402(Cl − ), must also be taken into account. Similar results have been presented in the literature [15,16,21,22].…”

“…Second, the swollen resin was transferred in a 1000 mL Berzelius flask and stirred for 2 h at 100 rpm with horizontal stirrer mixer at laboratory temperature with 500 mL 1 M HCl. The resin activated in Cl − form was washed with ultrapure water until the pH of supernatant was neutral and dried for a few days in a desiccator up to the constant mass of IRA 402(Cl − ) detection [15,16,20].…”

“…The experimental data obtained under the influence of the contact time were processed based on first order kinetic model, pseudo-second-kinetic model and the Morris Webber kinetic model [18][19][20][21] (8) where: qe, qt are the quantity of Cu(II) and Fe(III) retained at equilibrium and at time t, respectively, k1 and k2(min -1 ) are the rate constants of the sorption process of first order and second order model, respectively. The C is a dimensionless constant, which represents the amount of metal retained on the surface of the biomaterial and kid(min -1 ) is the value of the intra-particle diffusion constant.…”

“…Bioreactors have played an important role in the detoxification of hazardous pollutants and have been successfully applied in ex-situ bioremediation strategies [6]. Bioreactors are basically tanks in which living organisms carry out biological reactions [7][8][9]. These types systems display as main advantage a larger control of environmental and physico-chemical conditions affecting rates and extents of microbial growth and oil transformation such as oxygen supply, optimal pH, temperature and specific quantity nutrient providing an increase on biodegradation [7].…”
