A new extraction system containing a mixture of Cyanex 272 and caprylic acid is proposed for the extraction and separation of lanthanides(III). It was shown that this system possesses a high level of extraction ability and capacity. The extraction of lanthanides(III) from chloride-acetate and nitrate-acetate media was investigated on an example of La(III). The composition of the extracted species was confirmed, based on the analysis of lanthanum(III) extraction isotherms. In the case of acetic-acetate aqueous solutions, a decrease in lanthanum(III) extraction efficiency was observed, due to the decreasing equilibrium pH of the aqueous phase in accordance with the cation-exchange mechanism. The composition of the synergistic mixture of Cyanex 272-caprylic acid established demonstrates highly efficient separation of rare-earth metal ions.

α-Aminophosphonates, -phosphinates, and -phosphine oxides are a group of organophosphorus compounds that were investigated as extraction agents for rare earth (RE) metals and actinoids for the first time in the 1960s. However, more systematic investigations of their extraction properties towards REs and actinoids were not started until the 2010s. Indeed, recent studies have shown that these α-amino-functionalized compounds can outperform the commercial organophosphorus extraction agents in RE separations. They have also proven to be very efficient extraction and precipitation agents for recovering Th and U from RE concentrates. These actinoids coexist with REs in some of the commercially important RE-containing minerals. The efficient separation and purification of REs is becoming more and more important every year as these elements have a pivotal role in many existing technologies. If one also considers the facile synthesis of α-amino-functionalized organophosphorus extractants and precipitation agents, it is expected that they will be increasingly utilized in the extraction chemistry of REs and actinoids in the future. This review collates α-aminophosphonates, -phosphinates, and -phosphine oxides that have been utilized in the separation chemistry of REs and actinoids, including their most relevant synthetic routes and molecular properties. Their extraction and precipitation properties towards REs and actinoids are also discussed.

This study is aimed at determining the optimum mixing ratio and solvent group to extract REEs from nitric leach solution, and the efficiency was tested using three different kinds of extractants, which were prepared to mix three different solvents of Cyanex272, D2EHPA, and HQ. In order to select the best mixture system, different volumes (ml) of solvent extractions were used under optimum conditions (.05 M concentration and pH of 2). The result indicated that the mixture system of Cyanex272 (8 ml) and D2EHPA (2 ml) had the highest separation factor and enrichment ratio in the separation of rare earth element, especially dysprosium. The degree of performance of mixture systems in separation of the rare earth elements indicated that the best extraction systems were in the order of Cyanex272 (8 ml) and D2EHPA (2 ml) > HQ (2 ml) and D2EHPA (8 ml) > Cyanex272 (8 ml) and HQ (2 ml).
