Synergistic epistasis enhances the co-operativity of mutualistic interspecies interactions

Abstract: Early evolution of mutualism is characterized by big and predictable adaptive changes, including the specialization of interacting partners, such as through deleterious mutations in genes not required for metabolic cross-feeding.
