Synergistic Effect of RE (La, Er, Y, Ce) and Al-5Ti-B on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of 6111Aluminum Alloy

Abstract: For aluminum alloys, grain refinement is one of the effective methods for improving both strength and ductility. However, the refining effect of Al-Ti-B master alloy refiners deteriorates due to the agglomeration and sinking of the second phase particles. In this paper, the effects of rare earth type, rare earth content, and holding time on the microstructure and properties of Al-5Ti-B + RE/6111 were investigated by orthogonal experiment. It was shown that the addition of rare earth promoted the transformation… Show more

“…When CeLa is added alone, the alloy grain size decreases, and the refined grains with more boundaries hinder crack extension. The grain refinement and strengthening improve the mechanical properties of the alloy [44]. When GdY is added alone, the reticulated AlCuMnGdY phases formed along the grain boundaries in the alloy pin the grain boundaries and form high-density dislocation zones that hinder dislocation movement.…”

“…Moreover, the Ce element is the surface active substance that improves the wettability of the aluminum melt to the second phase [33]. Due to its unique electronic structure and electronegativity difference, the Ce element has a strong affinity with an oxygen atom (Ce 1.12, Al 1.61, O 3.44, Pauling scale), which easily breaks the oxide film barrier and provides favorable interface conditions for the reaction between C and Al [34][35][36][37]. However, the combination of rare earth elements and Al-Ti-based grain refiners to prepare new high-efficiency grain refiners has seldom been studied.…”

“…Numerous studies also show the possibility of refining the microstructure of hypoeutectic silumin and increasing its mechanical properties using the Al-Ti-B master alloy [59,60] or in combination with strontium [61][62][63] or other elements [64,65]. Studies conducted on the Al10%Si035%Mg alloy with the addition of Al1.5%Ti1.5%B and Sr showed a low effect of Sr modification and a good refining effect by the action of the Al-Ti-B master alloy [66,67]. The effect of eliminating the impact of any of the tested ingredients as improvers (modifiers and refiners) was not observed.…”
