Synergistic Effect of Photodynamic Therapy at 400 nm and Doxycycline Against Helicobacter Pylori

Abstract: Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the possible synergy between doxycycline and photodynamic therapy against Helicobacter pylori and to evaluate the possible side effects on adenocarcinoma gastric cells with and without protoporphyrin IX. Materials & methods: Three H. pylori strains (ATCC 700392, 43504 and 49503) were grown on solid medium either with, or without, doxycycline at subinhibitory concentrations, and irradiated for 10, 20 and 30 minutes with a 400 nm-peaked light source. The ph… Show more

“…Recent PACT applications have been developed for usage under white light (Nzambe Ta keki et al, 2016;Ringot et al, 2018;Aroso et al, 2019;Khaldi et al, 2019), blue light (Buchovec et al, 2016), and even solar light (Jia et al, 2019). Currently, PACT applications are actively pursued by several research groups, with applications in dentistry as a complement of systemic antibiotic treatments (de Freitas et al, 2016;Bechara Andere et al, 2018), as a non-invasive treatment against Helicobacter pylori (Baccani et al, 2019), and even as an environment-friendly alternative for active food packaging (i.e., biodegradable coatings for strawberries disinfection), food disinfection (i.e., curcumin derivatives for lettuce and mung beans disinfection), and other agronomical applications (i.e., porphyrinic insecticides and pesticides) (Riou et al, 2014;Buchovec et al, 2016;Glueck et al, 2017;Martinez et al, 2017).…”

“…Their safety was confirmed by on the bench and animal test results, which is normally considered as a prerequisite to further proceed with safety and efficacy studies in a clinical setting, regardless of whether efficacy studies are performed on an animal model. Therefore, these outcomes are very encouraging for the progression of the study in humans, not only for testing the safety of the capsule, but above all, for evaluating its therapeutic efficacy, alone or in possible association with antibiotic therapy [40].…”

“…Baccani et al conducted a study of 400 nm PDT combined with doxycycline against H. pylori. 78 The combined therapy produced a synergistic antibacterial effect, which improved the germicidal efficacy and decreased the light availability. Notably, doxycycline, which is a member of the tetracycline group, is also a PS.…”
