Synergistic Effect of Azotobacter nigricans and Nitrogen Phosphorus Potassium Fertilizer on Agronomic and Yieldtraits of Maize (Zea mays L.)

Abstract: Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) Azotobacter spp. is the most promising bacteria among all microorganisms. It is an aerobic, free-living, and N2-fixing bacterium that commonly lives in soil, water, and sediments. It can be used as a biofertilizer for plant growth and nutrient utilization efficiency. Maize is the highly consumed cereal food crop of the cosmopolitan population, and the sustainable maize productivity achieved by applying bacteria in combination with nitrogen phosphorus potassium (NPK) is pr… Show more

“…PGPR has many direct and indirect pathways for improving crop yields in stressed conditions, including the production of ACCD ( Sagar et al, 2020 ). The enzyme ACCD reduces the level of ACC in root exudates; a low level of ACC reduces the concentration of ethylene in plant roots, which aids in root length and thus nutrient absorption ( Sagar et al, 2022 ). The enzyme ACCD converts the ACC secreted by stressed plants into ammonia and-ketobutyrate, which has a significant impact on the physiology, growth, and development of the plant ( Saleem et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Various reports have demonstrated a significant increment in the vegetative growth traits when investigating the effect of organic and biofertilizers on the growth and development of different crops [ 23 , 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 , 70 , 71 , 72 , 73 , 74 ]. In the present study, the results revealed that treatments T4 (rock phosphate (RP) + strain HM3) indicated the highest and most positive significant values for plant height, number of leaves per plant, and root length ( Table 1 ).…”

“…Sims’ formula was used to determine the quantity of P in the soil, and Upadhyay and Sahu’s approach was used to determine the amount of potassium. The Sahrawat method was used to evaluate calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), and sodium (Na) [ 30 ].…”
