Synergistic effect in gamma‐irradiated poly(vinyl chloride) hard foils stabilized by plasticizer–stabilizer systems

Abstract: SynopsisChanges in transparency and color as well as GHCI values of hard PVC foils exposed to gamma radiation were investigated while using different amounts of the stabilizers ethylene glycol bis-8-aminocrotonate (I), calcium/zinc laurate + epoxy compounds (II), and magnesium/zinc stearate + sorbitol + epoxy compounds (III), and plasticizers dioctyl phthalate (DOP) (IV), dioctvl sebacate (V), propylene glycol polyadipate + octyl alcohol composition (VI), and diisotridecyl phthalate (VII).A strong synergistic … Show more

“…It is to point out that DINP degradation, as well as phthalic acid formation, is slower with the increase of initial additives concentration in the PVC formulation underlining a potential synergistic effect in systems containing both heat stabilizer, plasticizer and other additives as mentioned previously in literature (Szymański and Śmietańska, 1979).…”

“…However, in ref. (1) we were not able to say anything about the nature of the interaction of the plasticizer. In order to throw some light on this question we have investigated on the present work PVC model compounds.…”
