Synergistic degradation of deca-BDE by an enrichment culture and zero-valent iron

Abstract: Debromination of decabromodiphenyl ether (deca-BDE) by microbe and by zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been reported previously. However, no study has indicated the presence of microorganisms and their effect on ZVI-mediated reduction of deca-BDE. Synergistic degradation of deca-BDE by an enrichment culture and ZVI was studied. It was found that synergistic effects enhanced the debromination of deca-BDE as well as promoting the reduction of lower brominated products. ZVI stimulated microbial debromination by serving… Show more

“…have been shown to be present in an enriched bacterial culture involving sediment contaminated with BDE-209 and microscale ZVI, which seems to promote the degradation of BDE-209. PBDE congeners, such as nona-BDEs, octa-BDEs, hepta-BDEs, and hexa-BDEs, have been shown to have a synergistic effect on the degradation of PBDEs [31].…”

“…Interestingly, another abiotic source of DCM in groundwaters is the hydrogenolysis of chloroform (CF) by nZVI, which accumulates in the medium with no further degradation (Song and Carraway 2005 ). In this scenario, the approach of coupling nZVI treatments with functional anaerobic dechlorinating bacteria is promising to fully detoxify such chlorinated compounds (Chen et al 2014 ; Liu et al 2022 ; Kocur et al 2015 ; Kocur et al 2016 ; Wang et al 2016 ), but the effect of nZVI on bacterial degraders has been poorly explored yet.…”

“…11,12 Based on this, the nano-biological integrated system has attracted great attention and is considered as a potential strategy for the remediation of halogenated POPs. [13][14][15] In which, as an effective pretreatment process. nZVI and its composite materials could rapidly and greatly reduce the resistance of the contaminants and greatly improved the efficiency in biological process.…”
