Synergistic antioxidant activity of resveratrol with genistein in high-glucose treated Madin-Darby canine kidney epithelial cells

Abstract: Resveratrol (Re), a stilbenoid, is associated with a potential benefit in controlling certain biomarkers in type II diabetes. Genistein (Ge), a phytoestrogen, may act as an antioxidant and thus may diminish damaging effects of free radicals in tissues. In the present study, a potential synergistic antioxidant effect of an Re/Ge combination on high-glucose (HG) incubation in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) epithelial cells was evaluated. Compared with the treatment of Re or Ge alone, the Re/Ge combination syne… Show more

“…In LLC-PK1 cell line, cell survival was smaller for the same concentrations of l -arginine in comparison to MDCK I and II cell lines with peak of the effects shifted toward smaller concentrations of the antioxidant. These results are comparable to previous work done on kidney epithelial cell lines, which had shown dose dependence of antioxidant effect in reducing oxidative stress [ 34 , 35 ]. This shows that further studies are needed to determine what effect it would have on human kidney epithelial cells.…”

“…It is also present in win (Rafati et al, 2015). Resveratrol has been the focus of numerous studies investigating its biological attributes, which include mainly antioxidant activities (Chu et al, 2016). RSV is a polyphenolic compound that has demonstrated antiinflammatory and antioxidant effects, resulting from enhanced antioxidant enzymes production and modulating nuclear factors involved in the inflammation-oxidative stress cycle, as nuclear erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and nuclear factor-kB (NF-kB) (Saldanha et al, 2016).…”

“…In addition, the combination of RSV with genistein was reported to synergistically enhance antioxidant action in high-glucose treated Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) epithelial cells when compared with RSV only and this combination may also have a therapeutic potential in diabetic nephropathy [141]. However, further studies are required to determine the effects of these combinations on the bioavailability of RSV and clinical relevance in diabetic conditions.…”
