Synergistic anti‐oomycete effect of melatonin with a biofungicide against oomycetic black shank disease

Abstract: Human health, food safety, and agriculture have been threatened by oomycetic diseases caused by notorious pathogenic oomycetes. Chemical oomyceticides are the main approaches in control of pathogenic oomycetes. However, the overused chemical oomyceticides have resulted in serious environmental pollution and drug resistance. The eco-friendly bio-oomyceticides are required for sustainable development through screening synergistic drug combinations. In this study, Phytophthora nicotianae (P. nicotianae), as one o… Show more

“…Of particular note are the synergistic anti-fungal effects of melatonin and the fungicide Infinito (fluopicolide, Bayer ® ) on P. infestans, suggesting that melatonin could reduce the dose levels and enhance the efficacy of the fungicide against potato late blight [90]. The same synergistic action of melatonin and ethylicin (a bio-oomyceticide fungicide) has been described [98]. A similar beneficial effect of melatonin treatments was observed with other fungicides and herbicides (Table 1).…”

“…This pretreatment reduced the disease index by activating antioxidant enzymes and the expression of antioxidant-related genes [66]. Zhang, et al [67] demonstrated that the combined application of melatonin and ethylicin (an oomycete antifungal) has a synergistic effect that inhibits the in vitro and in vivo growth of Phytophthora nicotianae through disturbed amino acid metabolic homeostasis of this fungus. Exogenous application of melatonin in replant soil enhances apple seedling growth, raises K levels, and stimulates photosynthesis, which subsequently relieves the disorders of replant disease [68].…”

“…Similar results have been obtained in fungi such as Botrytis spp., Penicillium spp., Fusarium spp., P. nicotianae, and Alternaria spp. [67][68][69]. Furthermore, several investigations have studied the role of endophytic rhizobacteria in the reinforcement ability of plants to produce melatonin [70,71].…”

“…Phytophthora nicotianae is one of the most destructive soil-borne oomycetes pathogens in agriculture (Zhang et al, 2018;Lee et al, 2018). The fungus can infect tobacco, citrus, and other plants, causing serious economic losses (Jing et al, 2017).…”
