This article aims to uncover the current knowledge on using bioconverted agricultural byproducts in the chicken diet and the impact of these byproducts on performance, product quality, and health status. Agricultural and agro-industrial activities generate thousands of tons of byproducts. Converting these agricultural byproducts into valuable entities would be an environmentally friendly, sustainable, and viable part of byproduct management. Upon recycling to make new products, the process contributes to socio-economic value and maintaining environmental health and paves the way for realizing energy security and a circular economy. The current paper identifies that solid-state fermentation has attracted more research attention than other fermentation counterparts because it requires minimal moisture, good oxygen availability, cheap media, low wastewater generation, low cost, a low processing scheme, low energy demand, and high productivity. This paper illustrates the role of proteolytic and lignin-degrading enzymes present in bacteria and fungi in the bioconversion process of complex polymers into smaller molecules of amino acids and simple sugar with a profound improvement in the palatability and bioavailability of agricultural products. In addition, the paper gives more detailed insights into using bioconverted agricultural products in chickens to improve performance, product quality, gut microbiota and morphology, and chicken welfare. In conclusion, the bioconversion of agricultural byproducts is an encouraging endeavor that should be supported by governments, research centers, universities, and non-governmental entities to improve the productivity of animal source foods by ensuring environmental sustainability and expanding food security efforts for national development.

The cellulase production with Penicillium nalgiovense S11 on wheat pollard was enhanced using substrate pretreatments, i.e.: (i) mechanic process by Wiley milling, (ii) reducing sugars removal by water soaking, and (iii) chemical pretrcatment by 0.5% NaOH soaking at 100°C. The enzyme production stated as enzyme activities of all prctrcated substrates were higher than the untreated substrate. Although soaking with water showed significant increase in enzyme activities, the highest CMCase (EC 3.2.1.4), FPase (filter papcrase) and pglucosidase (EC 3.2.1.21) were observed on NaOH pretreated pollard. The NaOH prctreatment also enhanced the enzyme production by increasing substrate concentration from 2 to 4%. The optimal incubation time in the cellulase production on 4% NaOH-pretrcated pollard was observed on the fifth day. Addition of 250 ppm glucose also increased the enzyme activities. The optimal treatments increased the specific activities of CMCase, FPase, and |3-glucosidase into 60, 4, and 198 times, respectively, as compared to the specific activities on 2% unpretreated pollard.

Serangkaian penelitian dilakukan untuk menggantikan bungkil kedelai (SBM) dengan bungkil inti sawit (PKC) dalam ransum ayam petelur. Tahap pertama dilakukan untuk meningkatkan kandungan protein dan asam amino BIS melalui proses fermentasi dan dilanjutkan dengan penambahan enzim untuk meningkatkan kecernaan asam amino. Selanjutnya dilakukan uji biologis untuk mengetahui efektifitas PKC yang sudah difermentasi (FPKC) dan ditambahkan enzim (EFPKC) untuk menggantikan SBM didalam ransum ayam petelur. Nilai energy (AME) dari PKC, FPKC dan EFPKC diukur dengan menggunakan ayam broiler dan dilanjutkan dengan pengukuran nilai asam amino tercerna pada ileal (IAAD). Nilai AME dan IAAD dari EFPKC kemudian digunakan untuk meramu ransum penelitian. Ransum diberikan pada ayam petelur umur 51 minggu selama 8 minggu. Lima (5) jenis ransum disusun dengan kandungan gizi yang sama, tetapi SBM diganti dengan EFPKC secara bertingkat. Ransum perlakuan terdiri dari 1. Kontrol (tanpa EFPKC), 2. 25% SBM dalam ransum Kontrol diganti dengan EFPKC, 3. 50% SBM dalam ransum Kontrol diganti dengan EFPKC, 4. 75% SBM dalam ransum Kontrol diganti dengan EFPKC and 5. 100% of SBM dalam ransum Kontrol diganti dengan EFPKC. Setiap ransum perlakuan diberikan pada 24 ekor ayam (6 ulangan, 4 ekor/ulangan). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa fermentasi PKC meningkatkan protein kasar dan asam amino, kecuali threonin dan arginin, tetapi menurunkan AME. Penambahan enzim pada FPKC meningkatkan nilai IAAD. Akan tetapi hanya enzim BS4 yang dapat meningkatkan nilai AME pada EFPKC. Uji biologis menunjukkan bahwa sekitar 25 hingga 50% bungkil kedelai didalam ransum dapat diganti dengan bungkil inti sawit yang sudah difermentasi dan ditambahkan enzim tanpa meyebabkan gangguan yang berarti pada performan ayam petelur.
