Synergic effect of curcumin or lycopene with irradiation upon oral squamous cell carcinoma cells

Abstract: Curcumin and lycopene increase cytotoxic activity in the PE/CA-PJ15 cell line and reduce cell migration capacity, while the combination of curcumin or lycopene with irradiation exerts a synergic effect.

“…This result does not automatically exclude lactate generation by amino acid catabolism, as the glutamine pathway has not been described for OSCC and has yet to be revealed. Finally, focusing on combination strategies [116,158,186,244] (Table 2) with different signaling pathways ( e.g. mTOR) [245] that have the potential to eradicate malignant and premalignant clones are warranted [245,246].…”

“…Antioxidant compounds may take the form of synthetic molecules, which have roles through oxidative modification (Lopez-Jornet et al, 2016). Various works have researched the antioxidant potential of lycopene and its act in the protection of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disorders and cancers (Camacho-Alonso, López-Jornet, & Tudela-Mulero, 2013). It prevents cells versus the damage caused by chemicals, as it blocks of the membrane lipid per oxidation and radicals (Lopez-Jornet et al, 2016).…”

“…Camacho-Alonso et al [123] demonstrated that lycopene increases cytotoxic activity of radiotherapy in oral squamous cell carcinoma cells and reduces its invasiveness [123]. Similarly, Tabassum et al [124] reported that lycopene exerts a synergic effect when combined with radiation, in certain types of tumors such as HNSCC and prostate cancer.…”
