Layered yttrium hydroxide (LYH) was explored as a host material for a highly efficient organic UV‐absorber, 2‐hydroxy‐4‐methoxybenzophenone‐5‐sulfonic acid (BP5), with the intercalation of BP5 anions into the interlayer galleries of LYH. On the basis of the powder X‐ray diffraction (XRD) pattern and Infrared (IR) spectra of the resulting BP5‐LYH hybrid, it was suggested that the double aromatic rings of BP5 anion are arranged parallel to the hydroxocation layers in the interlayer space in LYH. Thermogravimetry (TG) curves indicated the incomplete inclusion of BP5 anions due to the insufficiency of the lateral area of the interlayer space in LYH to accommodate the parallel arrangement of fully exchanged BP5 anions. The UV absorption band of BP5 was so broad as to absorb over the full UV range after intercalation in the LYH host. Long‐term use tests showed that BP5 was not significantly released from the LYH matrix in artificial seawater. This hybrid was well dispersed in a PVA solution to produce transparent BP5‐LYH/PVA composite UV‐filter films. The BP5‐LYH hybrid exhibited excellent photostability in PVA composites, maintaining complete UV‐filtering performance under simulated sunlight. A BP5‐LYH hybrid could therefore be a promising candidate not only as a UV‐filter that does not release BP5 into aquatic systems but also as a transparent outdoor UV‐screening polymer film whose single species covers the full UV range.

Extending the durability of polymer plastics and minimizing toxicity concerns to humans and the environment are among the essential goals toward sustainability. Continuing our efforts in this area, we report herein the design, optimized synthesis, and migration studies of macromolecular benzophenones (MBPs) using three important building blocks including poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid), pentaerythritol, and tris(2,3-epoxypropyl)isocyanurate for sustainable food packaging applications. All MBPs are synthesized in gram scales, with the synthetic limitations being investigated. Interestingly, polymer-bound triphenyl phosphine is found to be an effective and recyclable Lewis-based catalyst for an epoxy ring opening reaction to prepare an MBP in only one step starting from 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone. The migration profiles of MBPs are much improved in comparison with that of the small molecule BP-1 (Uvinul 3008) and on par with the Food and Drug Administration-approved macromolecular cyanoacrylate Uvinul 3030 (UVN). They also show an excellent ability to protect polystyrene from photodegradation and yellowing processes, suggesting that they may find a real-life application in the plastic industry.

Improved performance of layered double hydroxide/hydrogenated nitrile rubber composites by addition of sorbic acid

Layered double hydroxide (LDH) was in situ modified by sorbic acid (SA) and used to reinforce hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) by direct blending method. SA connected LDH and HNBR via grafting/coordination mechanism. The results showed that SA could effectively improve the interaction between LDH and HNBR and significantly improve the dispersion of LDH in the rubber matrix. In addition, zinc sorbate (ZDS) formed by the reaction of SA and zinc oxide (ZnO) could self‐polymerize with the initiation of Dicumyl peroxide to form poly‐zinc sorbate, which is conducive to the reinforcement of rubber. The LDH/HNBR composite with SA loading of 20 phr has the best comprehensive mechanical properties, including tensile strength of 39.31 MPa, tear strength of 62.38 kN/m, shore A hardness of 85.1°, and elastic modulus of 20.14 MPa, which is significantly better than the LDH/HNBR composite without addition of SA. Our work provides a practicable and effective methodology for in situ modification of LDH and fabrication of high‐performance rubber composites.
