Synergetic Effect between Photocatalysis on TiO2 and Thermocatalysis on CeO2 for Gas-Phase Oxidation of Benzene on TiO2/CeO2 Nanocomposites

Abstract: TiO 2 /CeO 2 nanocomposites of anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles supported on microsized mesoporous CeO 2 were prepared and characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, XRD, Raman, XPS, and diffuse reflectance UV−vis absorption. The formation of the TiO 2 /CeO 2 nanocomposites considerably enhances their catalytic activity for the gas-phase oxidation of benzene, one of the hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), under the irradiation of a Xe lamp compared to pure CeO 2 and TiO 2 . A solar-light-driven thermocatalysis on CeO… Show more

“…We must underline that under the irradiation conditions used in this work (medium pressure Hg lamp, providing UV and to a lesser extent visible photons), the SPR effect of Au nanoparticles, involving an inverse transfer of electrons from Au to the CB of TiO2, should play a minor role, becoming important only when visible light is used as the irradiation source. Interestingly, when the cerium oxide was also present, photo-generated active species (superoxide oxygen and hydroxyl radicals) could allow an easier re-oxidation of ceria, thus speeding up its redox process [22,23]. These processes were beneficial for the complete oxidation to CO2.…”

“…Due to the precise control of photocatalytic reduction and oxidation, photocatalytic molecular synthesis has also attracted much interest, which provides a sustainable pathway for green synthesis. [14][15][16] For an efficient photocatalytic process, solar light harvesting and a redox process based on photogenerated charge carriers are essential steps. Solar light harvesting consists of light absorption and charge carrier excitation steps, which can be expressed as the light utilization efficiency.…”

“…Recently, heterostructures (e.g. TiO 2 /ZnO, TiO 2 /CdS, TiO 2 /BiO 3 , TiO 2 / CeO 2 , and TiO 2 /LaVO 4 ) [19][20][21][22][23] have been investigated for the purpose of degrading aqueous waste dyes (e.g. rhodamine B, methylene blue, and bisphenol A), but few have been examined for the elimination of VOCs [24].…”
