Precisely identifying the atomic structures in single-atom sites and establishing authentic structure–activity relationships for single-atom catalyst (SAC) coordination are significant challenges. Here, theoretical calculations first predicted the underlying catalytic activity of Fe–N x C4–x sites with diverse first-shell coordination environments. Substituting N with C to coordinate with the central Fe atom induces an inferior Fenton-like catalytic efficiency. Then, Fe-SACs carrying three configurations (Fe–N2C2, Fe–N3C1, and Fe–N4) fabricate facilely and demonstrate that optimized coordination environments of Fe–N x C4–x significantly promote the Fenton-like catalytic activity. Specifically, the reaction rate constant increases from 0.064 to 0.318 min–1 as the coordination number of Fe–N increases from 2 to 4, slightly influencing the nonradical reaction mechanism dominated by 1O2. In-depth theoretical calculations unveil that the modulated coordination environments of Fe-SACs from Fe–N2C2 to Fe–N4 optimize the d-band electronic structures and regulate the binding strength of peroxymonosulfate on Fe–N x C4–x sites, resulting in a reduced energy barrier and enhanced Fenton-like catalytic activity. The catalytic stability and the actual hospital sewage treatment capacity also showed strong coordination dependency. This strategy of local coordination engineering offers a vivid example of modulating SACs with well-regulated coordination environments, ultimately maximizing their catalytic efficiency.

Although the presence of SARS-CoV-2 fragments in raw sewage water are not much concerning, since it is a new pathogen and its fate in the environment is poorly understood; therefore efforts are needed for their effective removal. In under-developed countries with poor sewersheds and sanitation practices, the raw sewage water might come in contact with rivers and other water bodies and is generally used by the population for various purposes including drinking water. Hence it is important to properly treat sewage water to reduce public health risks, if any. Our study evaluated various advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for disinfection of SARS-CoV-2 from sewage water collected from the academic institutional residential campus. The present study is the first report showing hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) used to reduce the SARS-CoV-2 viral load from sewage water. Additionally, we have also evaluated hybrid techniques like HC/O3, HC/O3/H2O2, HC/H2O2, O3/UV, UV/H2O2, UV/H2O2/O3, and O3/H2O2 for the minimization of the SARS-CoV-2 viral load from sewage water. The sewage water treatment techniques were evaluated based on its viral concentration-reducing efficiency by comparing it with the same raw sewage water sample. However, ozone alone and its combination with other disinfecting techniques (like HC, UV, and H2O2) showed >95% SARS-CoV-2 specific RNA-reducing efficiency (also known as viral load). The AOPs treated sewage water was subjected to total nucleic acid isolation followed by RT-qPCR for viral load estimation. Interestingly, all sewage water treatment techniques used in this study significantly reduces both the SARS-CoV-2 viral load as well as PMMoV (faecal indicator) load.

A large-scale deployment of electro-Fenton (EF) technology faces significant challenges, including the high cost of catalysts, complex electrode preparation, and limited energy utilization efficiency. Wood-derived carbon materials (WDCM) with three-dimensional (3D) structures have shown immense potential for energy storage and environmental remediation, due to their low cost and raw-material abundance, particularly the hierarchical structures for efficient mass transfer and ease of modification in electrochemical performance. The cost-effecitve and environmentally friendly nature as well as outstanding electrochemical performances make WDCM promising candidates for green and renewable electro-Fenton (EF) systems. In WDCM-based EF systems, it is crucial to explore suitable strategies for structural engineering and modification, enabling a better understanding of the relationships among structure, property, and performance. In this review, we present a perspective on wood redesign through structural engineering and chemical modification to regulate its mechanical properties and optimize mass transfer in electrochemical performance. Furthermore, we comprehensively discuss the recent advances and pathways of wood-based electro-Fenton systems. Finally, we provide a road map for the future challenges and opportunities of upscaling wood-based electro-Fenton systems for practical water treatments.
