Synchronous and Metachronous Breast Malignancies: A Cross-Sectional Retrospective Study and Review of the Literature

Abstract: Objective. There is increasing interest in patients with metachronous (MBC) and synchronous breast cancer (SBC). The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and outcome of MBCs and SBCs. Methods. A retrospective study on women operated in our department for breast cancer between 2002 and 2005 was carried out. Patients were divided into three groups: women with MBC, SBC, and unilateral breast cancer (UBC). Moreover, we performed a meta-analysis of the English literature about multiple breast canc… Show more

“…However, the small numbers of patients with BBC noted are consistent with published data. In a recent report by Londero et al, 22 a review of the published literature reveals the prevalance of MBC and SBC is low, at 3% and 7%, respectively.…”

“…Using the SEER database, we compared the clinical and pathological characteristics of sCBC and mCBC patients. We used 6 months as the interval time to divide CBC into sCBC or mCBC; this cutoff was previously used in other studies [710]. However, there is no consensus on the definite cutoff time for differentiating sCBC from mCBC.…”

“…However, whether the development of sCBC or mCBC influenced patient prognosis remains unclear. Some studies suggested that sCBC patients had poor outcomes, whereas others indicated a similar survival in sCBC and mCBC patients [8910]. In addition, the cutoff value of the interval time to differentiate sCBC from mCBC remains inconsistent [71011].…”

“…The WHO Classification of Tumours of the Breast adopts this definition, which is used frequently in studies (Alkner et al 2011;Hartman et al 2007;Sandberg et al 2012b;Schmid et al 2011), but also mentions the benefit of a longer time interval for epidemiological [10] assessments. Many studies favour a longer cut-off time to distinguish bilateral breast cancers (Bernstein et al 2003;Londero et al 2014;Nichols et al 2011;Rubino et al 2010;Schaapveld et al 2008;Verkooijen et al 2007;Vichapat et al 2011a;Vichapat et al 2012;Vichapat et al 2011b;Yerushalmi et al 2009). As there is no consensus concerning these definitions, we conducted further analyses with different cut-off times.…”
