Synchronization of ovulation and fixed-time artificial insemination in beef cattle

Abstract: The main objective of the implementation of artificial insemination (AI) in cattle is to produce a sustained genetic progress in the herd. Although AI is an old reproductive biotechnology, its widespread implementation is very recent and is mainly because of the use of protocols that allows AI without oestrus detection, commonly called fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI). The development of FTAI protocols also allowed the application of AI in larger, extensively managed herds and especially in suckled co… Show more

“…A significantly higher proportion of cows were pregnant in the first 28 d post-TAI in the eCG-supplemented group compared with the other synchronization treatments used. These observations are in agreement with other studies that have investigated the effect of eCG on reproductive performance of anestrous beef cows (reviewed in Bó and Baruselli, 2014;Bó et al, 2016). A recent report analyzed the effect of eCG treatment at the end of a P4-based synchronization program on fertility performances of crossbred (Bos taurus × Bos indicus) dairy cows in a pasture-based system.…”

“…FTAI means that all cows can be inseminated within a short period of time at the beginning of the mating season, thereby concentrating calving during a period when pasture quality is higher, resulting in an increase in the probability of pregnancy in the next breeding season (Baruselli et al 2012). FTAI associated with pregnancy diagnosis by ultrasound determined higher pregnancy rate detection which facilitates subsequent estrus synchronization of non-pregnant animals for natural mating or artificial insemination (Sá Filho et al 2014;Bó and Baruselli 2014). A larger proportion of IWR and HWR farmers used pregnancy diagnosis by ultrasound (81 and 63 %, respectively), although the HWR cluster was not different from LWR.…”
