Abstract. Reliable and accurate time delay estimation is an important signal processing problem and is critical to a diverse set of applications. Multi-user receivers in asynchronous Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) systems require the knowledge of several parameters including delay estimates between users. In this paper, we address this problem by proposing a novel approach based on blind least mean squares (LMS) based early-late delay tracker. Analytical expressions have been derived and simulation results of the proposed delay tracker are compared with the classical delay locked loop (DLL) approach in a multipath fading scenario. These results show that the proposed delay tracker provides very good tracking performance in challenging cases of multipath delays.

Multipath propagation, multiple access interference and non-line of sight propagation, etc. have impeded the accuracy in mobile data measurements. Multiuser receivers in asynchronous Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) systems require the knowledge of several parameters such as timing delay between users. In this paper, the problem of time delay estimation for CDMA systems is examined by proposing an approach based on blind nonlinear least mean squares (LMS) based early-late delay tracker. A system model is developed and a delay tracking algorithm is presented. The simulation results of the proposed delay tracker are compared with the classical delay-locked loop (DLL) approach in a multipath scenario and these show that the proposed delay tracker provides very good performance in challenging cases of closely spaced multipath delays

The IEEE802.11b WLAN standard employs directsequence/spread-spectrum (DS/SS) modulation. With a fractional sampling RAKE receiver, it is possible to achieve diversity and reduce the BER in DS/SS communication. In order to realize the diversity through fractional sampling, the impulse response of the channel must be estimated. In this paper, a channel estimation scheme for a RAKE receiver with fractional sampling in IEEE802.11b WLAN system is investigated through a computer simulation and an experiment. In order to estimate the impulse response of the channel, a pseudo-inverse matrix with a threshold is employed. Numerical results indicate that the channel can be estimated with an optimum threshold in both the simulation and the experiment.
