Synaptic inputs from identified bipolar and amacrine cells to a sparsely branched ganglion cell in rabbit retina

Abstract: There are more than 30 distinct types of mammalian retinal ganglion cells, each sensitive to different features of the visual environment. In rabbit retina, they can be grouped into four classes according to their morphology and stratification of their dendrites in the inner plexiform layer (IPL). The goal of this study was to describe the synaptic inputs to one type of Class IV ganglion cell, the third member of the sparsely branched Class IV cells (SB3). One cell of this type was partially reconstructed in a… Show more

“…29,72 Data Analysis and Visualization Data analysis and 3D rendering were performed using an open-source Matlab program (https:// github.com/neitzlab/sbfsem-tools). 4 The cone pedicle analyses were based on XYZ coordinates of the closed curve control points, connected by Catmull-Rom splines. All other analysis was performed using the X, Y, Z coordinates and radius of the Disc annotations.…”

“…It also differs from OD1 and OD2 cells, bearing many very small dendritic spines in the perisomatic region (Figure 43). It is most similar to the SB3/OD3 cell (Bordt et al, 2019), but is much larger.…”

“…They apparently consist of two broad groups: (a) OD1 and OD2 cells, a number of which are represented in the present sample, and (b) OD3 and OD4 cells, only the latter of which has been found in the present study. An OD3 cell, similar to but smaller than the OD4 cell, was studied by electron microscopy, and was referred to in that study as the SB3 ganglion cell (Bordt et al, 2019).…”

“…Data analysis and three dimensional rendering were performed using an open-source Matlab (Mathworks, RRID: SCR_001622) program https://github.com/neitzlab/sbfsem-tools RRID: SCR_017350 and Tulip ( https://tulip.labri.fr/site/ ). The image rendering was performed using the RenderApp function 17 . Using the SynapseSphere function, synapses were rendered as unit spheres centered at each synapse annotation’s X, Y and Z coordinates then scaled to optimize visibility.…”
