Symptoms of Stress and Depression as Correlates of Sleep in Primary Insomnia

Abstract: Observed relationships among symptoms of stress, depression, subjective sleep complaints, and electroencephalographic power may be relevant to the discrepancy between subjective and objective measures of sleep in patients with insomnia and may be more broadly applicable to sleep complaints in association with stressful life events and major depression.

“…Thus, further studies need to be performed that explicitly examine exposure to life events with and without depression comorbidity. The measurement of stressful life event-related intrusive thought and avoidance behavior in several studies (Hall et al, 1998;Hall et al, 1998;Hall et al, 2000) suggests a promising model for examining how the response to a stressor is related to effects on SL and delta sleep.…”

“…Hall et al (1998) also reported that greater frequency of intrusion and avoidance was significantly correlated with longer SL and greater awake time during the first NREM period. In quantitative EEG analysis, stress-related intrusive thoughts were associated with higher beta power, and increased subjective stress burden was associated with decreased delta power (Hall et al, 2000).…”

“…Responses of "never" were considered to indicate unrefreshing sleep and responses of "most of the time" and "sometimes" were grouped to indicate the absence of this sleep problem. (33,37), lifestyle factors (25,38), other chronic conditions (8,9), and mental health (39,40) have all been linked to sleep disorders, and as such, an a priori decision was made to include these factors in multivariate analyses. Lifestyle factors.…”
