Purpose Cancer survivors may experience sleep disturbances during and after their cancer treatments. While pharmacological approaches are commonly used to address sleep disturbances, they may have a number of adverse effects. This review studied the effect of two non-pharmacological interventions (massage and relaxation therapy) on sleep disturbances in cancer survivors. Methods A search for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PEDro, and CINAHL using relevant keywords. Results The search yielded 371 articles, with 4 RCTs studying massage therapy and 3 RCTs studying relaxation therapy included for qualitative analysis. Massage therapy studies showed statistically significant improvement in self-reported sleep questionnaires and objectively recorded long sleep episodes, as assessed via an accelerometer. No significant improvements in sleep outcomes were observed in the relaxation therapy studies, although there were trends for improved self-reported sleep quality. Conclusion While massage therapy provided by massage therapists may have some potential for improving sleep outcomes for cancer survivors, there is no such current evidence regarding relaxation therapy. Implications for Cancer Survivors Cancer survivors who experience sleep disturbances may benefit from regular sessions with a massage therapist. However, future studies should examine the long-term feasibility of massage therapist–delivered services, particularly for cancer survivors with limited finances, and determine if benefits can be obtained if massage is provided by non-certified individuals. Relaxation therapy appears to be safe for cancer survivors, but future RCTs involving larger sample sizes need to be conducted to better determine its feasibility and efficacy.

Being comfortable is something desired from birth onward and a goal to be achieved. A baby's or a child's stopping crying when taken on the lap or kissed when he/she hurts his/her knee, or an elderly person's expressing his/her relaxation when his/her hand is touched or when someone else sits next to him are the examples of being comfortable. Comfort, which is a significant need throughout life, is not a new concept in nursing; it is a basic requirement. Aging is a condition affecting the whole life of the elderly physically, psychologically, socially and economically. According to the Comfort Theory, which deals with all the physical, psychospiritual, sociocultural and environmental factors holistically, the aim of the nursing care is to meet the comfort requirements of the elderly. The basic elements of comfort theory form the basis for the conceptualization of nursing interventions aiming to provide comfort for the elderly. Identifying the needs of the elderly and planning and implementing appropriate nursing interventions to meet the elderly's unmet needs should be among the care services a nurse is expected to provide. The nurse should identify the concept of comfort correctly in an older person and provide comfort both in the indoor or outdoor environment when the older person has pain, is at rest, and is at home, in a nursing home or under hospital conditions. In this sense, encouraging, strengthening and supporting elderly individuals through therapeutic outcomes make the provision of mental comfort easier. An elderly person who is relaxed, trouble-free and comfortable will recover faster, will be better rehabilitated or will pass away in a more peaceful atmosphere since he/she is able to better deal with the stress caused by the disease.

Objetivo: analisar as atitudes de enfermeiros acerca da administração de antineoplásicos em oncologia pediátrica. Método: estudo descritivo, com análise estatística dos dados. Participaram 20 enfermeiros de um hospital de ensino, localizado na capital paulista, que administravam quimioterapia (QT) a crianças e adolescentes. Em 2016, mediante questionário autoaplicável, foram coletados dados de caracterização dos participantes e sobre suas atividades profissionais na administração de QT, que incluíam principais receios e preocupações, além dos potenciais eventos adversos associados à quimioterapia. Resultados: poucos participantes eram especialistas na área de oncologia ou pediatria; a maioria dos profissionais buscou conhecimento e capacitação por iniciativa própria; os enfermeiros classificaram a atividade como complexa e específica para quem possui interesse na área. Conclusão: todos os enfermeiros consideraram a QT o principal tratamento para o câncer infanto-juvenil. O risco de extravasamento e a falta de dispositivos adequados para administração das drogas foram os fatores que mais preocuparam os participantes.
