Symptom interval of osteosarcoma around the knee joint: an analysis of 82 patients of a single institute

Abstract: The time from first onset of symptoms or signs to a definitive diagnosis and initiation of treatment is defined as symptom interval (SI), the impact of SI on prognosis of patient with osteosarcoma (OS) remains unclear. A total medical records of 52 male and 30 female aged between 8 and 61 (median, 17) with OS around the knee joint were reviewed. Two components of SI, patient delay and professional delay were analysed. The median total SI was 2 months (range from 0.2 to 13.2 months). The median patient delay wa… Show more

“…This study focused on the potential impact of two time intervals on the survival of children diagnosed with osteosarcoma who were treated in an LMIC. Our findings reveal that the median LD was longer than that observed in HIC and was comparable to reported times in other LMIC . Initial metastatic disease was found in 42.4% of patients; however, we failed to associate this finding with a delayed LD, which is similar to published data .…”

“…In this study, we did not find an association between survival and LD as previously reported. 9,10,20,23 In a study by Kim et al, patients with a delayed diagnosis due to an initial misdiagnosis exhibited an inferior survival (mean physician delay, 10.5 months). 28 Conversely, better outcomes have been reported in patients with a longer LD.…”

“…In recent years, the studies on the prognostic indicators for tumours including osteosarcoma (Li et al., ) have been largely increased. These indicators include patient age, tumour location, specific expression of a certain gene, tumour size, lactate dehydrogenase level and ALP level (Arai & Kojima, ; Bacci et al., ; Pochanugool et al, ).…”

“…One particular optimization criterion was to experimentally determine high‐resolution structures for those protein families for which structures were neither known experimentally nor could be model‐ed through comparative modeling . An additional objective was the prioritization of those families according to the highest leverage of each experimental nugget . Put simply: determine structures for the largest families for which no structural knowledge is available.…”
