SymplecticNand time reversal in frustrated magnetism

Abstract: Identifying the time reversal symmetry of spins as a symplectic symmetry, we develop a large N approximation for quantum magnetism that embraces both antiferromagnetism and ferromagnetism. In SU (N ), N > 2, not all spins invert under time reversal, so we have introduced a new large N treatment which builds interactions exclusively out of the symplectic subgroup[SP (N )] of time reversing spins, a more stringent condition than the symplectic symmetry of previous SP (N ) large N treatments. As a result, we obta… Show more

“…While theoretical studies exist on the order-from-disorder phenomenon and phase diagram of the J 1 − J 2 model 28,29 , the spin dynamics in the paramagnetic phase of the model in the (π, 0) collinear regime has not yet been systematically studied. We carry out the calculations using a modified spin wave theory 30 , which incorporates the 1/S corrections that are important for capturing the order-from-disorder phenomenon and the associated dynamical properties.…”

“…The symplectic group SP (N ) offers many advantages for condensed matter physics, allowing for a consistent extension of the notion of time reversal symmetry to the large-N limit, which permits one to form singlet pairs of particles that are absent in the SU (N ) generalization 40,41 . This capability is vital to describe antiferromagnetism and superconductivity.…”
