Symmetry of local minimizers for the three-dimensional Ginzburg–Landau functional

Abstract: Abstract. We classify nonconstant entire local minimizers of the standard Ginzburg-Landau functional for maps in H 1 loc (R 3 ; R 3 ) satisfying a natural energy bound. Up to translations and rotations, such solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau system are given by an explicit solution equivariant under the action of the orthogonal group.

“…In the GL-framework, researchers study maps, u : R d → R m , d, m = 2, 3 (see e.g. [5,25,31]), whereas the LdG variable is a five-dimensional map, Q : R 3 → R 5 . A uniaxial Q-tensor has two degenerate non-zero eigenvalues and hence, three degrees of freedom and in this case, there is broader scope for transferable methodologies (see for example, [15]).…”

“…Indeed in this case due to the main result in [42] one has the following equivalent statements: Besides possible technical assumptions, the expected symmetry property for M = N ≥ 3 should be a consequence of the following two principles already stated in [44], namely local minimality =⇒ asymptotic symmetry at infinity and asymptotic symmetry =⇒ full symmetry.…”

“…Thus in the general case, the key step is to show the convergence at infinity to a rotation, and this property for N = 3 is deduced in [42] from the fact that the nonconstant locally minimizing degree-zero homogeneous harmonic map u ∞ ∈ H 1 loc (R 3 ; S 2 ) must be x |x| up to a rotation, due to a celebrated result in [14]. Thus, the main difficulty at present seems to be the lack of a corresponding rigidity result for the degree-zero homogeneous locally minimizing harmonic map in H 1 loc (R N ; S N −1 ) for N ≥ 4.…”
