Symmetry building and symmetry breaking in synchronized movement

Abstract: Mirror symmetry between individuals is a behavioral phenomenon that is commonly observed in conversation: individuals tend to mimic each other's postures and gestures as a part of a shared dialog. The present work studies the process of symmetry building and symmetry breaking in the movements of pairs of individuals while imitating each others' movements in dance. Spatial and temporal symmetries are found in the overall velocities from the results of full body motion tracking.

“…Head motion is captured using either a motion-tracking device [88], [89], [90] or a video-based tracking algorithm [91], [92], [93], [94], [95], [96]. Many studies capture the global movements of the participants [97], [75], [98], [79], [33], [99], [100], [101], [57], [102], [103], [104]. Except for Boker and Rotondo [98], who used a motion-tracking device, these studies use a video-based algorithm to evaluate the dyad's motion.…”

Except for Boker and Rotondo [98], who used a motion-tracking device, these studies use a video-based algorithm to evaluate the dyad's motion. Other studies have also focused on the motion of an apparatus being actuated by the participants (swinging pendulum [105], [106], [107], [108], [109], [108] or rocking chair [110]).…”

“…Fourth and in relation to the third point, to contribute further to writing down the principles of interpersonal coordination, a clearer view about the role “symmetric” and “asymmetric” relations would be probably very informative (Boker and Rotondo, 2002). Here symmetric have to be understood as referring to the structure and intrinsic dynamics of the components, not the behavior.…”

“…As stated in the introductory example, observing eyes are also perturbing. Coupling is explicitly interpreted and dealt with by mathematicians as a perturbation of intrinsic (isolated) dynamics of the components, hence the presence of the observer offers a source of potential information creation (Boker and Rotondo, 2002). The mirror will not tell you much about yourself, but another person, by definition different, may do so.…”
